IACC and World Heart Federation supporting Global AF Action Update

Posted on 23 May 2012

Dear Member,

The World Heart Federation is pleased to bring you some exciting news about developments in the combat against atrial fibrillation (AF).

This month, World Heart Federation are lending their voice and endorsement to the 1 Mission 1 Million – Getting to the Heart of Stroke initiative (1M1M) which aims to raise awareness of AF and its link to stroke. As part of the World Heart Federation alignment with the WHO target of 25 percent reduction in premature mortality from cardiovascular disease and other NCDs by 2025, we are supporting this campaign which can help elevate AF and stroke on the global agenda.

Having successfully concluded phase one in which 1M1M succeeded in supporting 32 viable projects in 18 countries with over 200,000 people already directly benefiting from the ongoing work to help prevent AF-related strokes. Following the success achieved in 2011:

1M1M will continue to provide a fundraising springboard for projects which aim to prevent AF-related strokes – funding will be provided via donations from individuals which will be matched by Boehringer Ingelheim (up to €100k)

People will be able to add their individual real-life stories to the website so that others can gain inspiration from them

A petition will encourage 1 million people to support a movement against AF-related stroke

To ensure continued success in this exciting new phase and specifically for the petition, the World Heart Federation endorsed 1M1M campaign needs your organization’s support – the objective is simple:

“To take AF-related stroke prevention to the top of the global healthcare agenda by securing 1 million signatures”

Ambitious? Yes! However, with the support and assistance of your society we can make a good start towards achieving this goal, and a critical first step in reaching our ambitious 25 by 2025 target.

Step one: visit www.heartofstroke.com on 22nd May when the next phase will be launched

Step two: sign the petition and e-mail your members, colleagues, friends and associates – asking them to add their name and signature

Step three: watch out from May and June onwards for further updates on the World Heart Federation’s Global AF Action campaign, of which our endorsement for 1M1M is just one part

We will send you further updates in the coming weeks detailing how else your society can support this global cause.

Thank you.

 Best regards,

Dr.Rajesh Rajan

President IACC
